Syllabus Details
 

 

Session 1: Introduction to Seminar - 
What leadership currently looks like in the Jewish community


Participants will learn about the current Jewish community structure, as well as discuss the changing landscape in American Jewish life. Participants will also be introduced to the organizations that are participating in the seminar and the goals of the year seminar meet their cohort and create team program goals.


Session 2: Ethics, Integrity, Tzedakah


Before being able to embark in a study of leadership, we need to know who we are and where we come from. Participants will be learning about the results of the personality indicator test, determining learning style and seeing ways that Jewish values can be applied to business and shape the Jewish community.


Session 3: Vision, Goal Planning & Project Development


During this session participants will hear from communal leaders about pivotal points in their careers and discuss different goal/strategic planning models to structure vision plans.


Session 4: The Voice of a Leader:
​Presentation, Communication & Motivation Strategies

 

Presentation skills are just as important as the information being presented. The leader’s ability to communicate their vision and inspire others is crucial in their being able to share and value the leader’s vision. We will discuss the preparation of a message, methods of presentation and also delivery style.  


Session 5: Fundraising, Budgeting & Development 


Numbers, Community Engagement, Event Planning and Public Speaking. This topic has many components and most people are only able to do a few naturally, but the true leader can bring them all together from the creation of a budget, to the “Ask” to sustaining donors. 


Session 6: Critical Thinking, Decision Making & Creativity 


All leaders are faced with making decisions and guiding groups to make conclusions. While we often assume that all decisions are made rationally, however there is also a place for creativity and emotion and even listening in this process. Participants will discuss and practice multiple decision making models.


Session 7: Leaders in Action -
​Leadership strategies & competencies in Nonprofit Organizations


Leaders from the partnering Jewish organizations and the partnered student will share their organization’s structure with the class. The leader will also discuss their top leadership strategy or competency. 


Session 8: Engagement and Grassroots Mobilization


Engagement is an approach to ensure that members of the community, including employees are involved and committed to the organizations goals and mission. The role of the leader is to be involved both in outreach, and in creating an environment where people can become involved. Grassroots change can become an important part of engagement by having the community drive the engagement. Participants will explore how a leader can support community mobilization.


Session 9: Where Do YOU Go from Here? - 
Presentation of final projects


At the course’s conclusion we will reflect on the year’s journey and discuss future directions for the Jewish community and the partnering organization.  Participants will also present their development plan and final project.

Program Elements

Monthly Meetings

Participants will meet for three hours on a monthly basis over a year for nine sessions to learn from speakers and group discussion. Classes will begin with a provided dinner, discussion about the previous seminar and readings, followed by a presentation about the month’s topic & group discussion.

Community Engagement

To gain the opportunity to actively participate in organizations that play a role in the Jewish community, the Federation is partnering with local Jewish organizations to present to the groups throughout the year. Participants will work with a partnering organization & complete a community project.

Journaling

Writing is often the best way to help a person reflect on their intentions. Writing down goals often helps people maintain their commitment. Participants will create monthly journal entries based on prompts to create a development plan. Journal entries will be discussed at each class with a peer.

Final Project

The vision project will include the student’s personal development plan created throughout the course. The project will be identified by the participant & community organization. The student will assess the situation & present a solution using leadership strategies from the course.
