The Portland Folkmusic Society and EJC Present a Global Folk Song Workshop with Mike Van Liew!

From the Instructor:

In this workshop we will explore folk songs from around the world. We will encounter a variety of rhythms, languages, and melodies. This will inspire us to expand our musical knowledge, and deepen our understanding of other cultures. And we'll have fun! First I'll sing through short versions of the songs so you can hear them. Then we'll warm up a bit and sing through them, taking time to learn melodies, pronunciation of lyrics, etc. We'll start with your favorites, because we may not have time to go through all of them. The songs are from Kazakhstan, Haiti, Spain, New Zealand, Macedonia, India, France, Alaska, and Hawaii.

All Ages $10/Person

About Mike Van Liew
Mike Van Liew has been working as a musician, composer, arranger, recording artist, and teacher in Portland for over 40 years. Originally trained on trumpet, he now plays mostly piano and flute. Mike has collaborated and performed with The Flying Karamazov Brothers, 3 Leg Torso, Do Jump!, Oslund and Company, the Klezmorim, the Portland Marathon, and the Oregon Zoo. These collaborations have led him to perform nationally (including on Broadway) and internationally. He performed with his 8-piece band at the 2017 PDX Jazz Festival. Mike recorded an album of his original songs, Polyglot, in 2005. His most recent project is a collection of 10 Inventions for solo piano.

Since 1976, Portland FolkMusic Society has been active preserving, presenting and promoting folk music and arts in the greater Portland Oregon area. PFS sponsors song circles, concerts, workshops and retreats – in person and virtual – and helps its members and the whole community pass the word around about folk music events, from old time ballads to sea shanties, from 60’s protest folk to contemporary singer-songwriters.

PFS is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
